Western Pennsylvania Special Hockey (WPSHA) was founded in 2014 with a small group of parents with children that have disabilities that were willing to take a chance. We recognized a need within the surrounding communities that there were not many activities structured directly for disabled children. So, they started the process of getting the 501(c)3 non-profit, got the ice time at a local rink, unbelievable support for a local youth hockey organization SHAHA. SHAHA performed equipment drives, volunteers and coaches to help us get started. Along with us adopting the core values of American Special Hockey Association (ASHA) on how to use the game of hockey to assist individuals with disabilities in developing characteristics. Such as dependability, self-reliance, confidence, concentration, willingness to share, and personal accountability, which will help the individual, be more successful both within and outside a hockey environment.
WPSHA is to organize, administer, and promote special ice hockey for the communities of Western Pennsylvania regardless of sex, race, creed, religion, and/or financial situation. To educate, motivate, and encourage, individuals, who have developmental and physical disabilities to participate in the sport of ice hockey in an environment that is adapted to the ability levels of the participating athletes. To educate and encourage the public about sports that are adapted for people with disabilities and special hockey in particular and to promote societal awareness of the challenges and needs of persons who have developmental and physical disabilities.
